Fusing Classical Music and Hip-Hop Culture

Black Violin is an innovative musical duo consisting of two classically trained string instrumentalists, Kevin Sylvester (Kev Marcus) and Wilner Baptiste (Wil B), who have successfully combined classical violin with hip-hop culture to create a “violently beautiful” experience.

In anticipation of their upcoming ‘Classical Boom Tour’, the band sought to develop a unique way of connecting with their audience by providing a memorable experience and offering cool merchandise.

Objective

As Creative Director, my goal was to create a comprehensive strategy for Black Violin that would resonate with their audience, elevate the band’s image, and promote the ‘Classical Boom Tour’ effectively.

Strategy

  1. Collaborate with Black Violin to understand their unique blend of music, their audience, and their vision for the tour.
  2. Develop a cohesive visual identity that reflects the fusion of classical music and hip-hop culture.
  3. Design and produce appealing merchandise that complements the band’s image and connects with fans.
  4. Promote the tour and merchandise through a targeted marketing campaign, focusing on both online and offline channels.

Results

  1. Successfully raised awareness and generated buzz around the Classical Boom Tour, attracting a wider audience to Black Violin’s performances.
  2. Created a strong visual identity that became synonymous with the band’s unique fusion of classical music and hip-hop culture.
  3. Increased fan engagement and loyalty through the sale of well-designed and appealing merchandise.
  4. Gained media attention and exposure for the band, solidifying their reputation as innovative and talented musicians.

My Contributions

As Creative Director, my role included:

  1. Developing the overall creative vision for the project and guiding the team throughout the process.
  2. Collaborating with Black Violin to understand their goals, vision, and unique musical style.
  3. Providing strategic direction on visual identity, merchandise design, and marketing campaign execution.
  4. Supervising the implementation of the marketing campaign to ensure its success and alignment with the band’s objectives.

The collaboration with Black Violin resulted in a successful marketing campaign that elevated the band’s image, connected with their fans, and promoted the Classical Boom Tour effectively, showcasing the power of creative direction in transforming a project’s outcome.
