ESPNW Art Direction & Design

ESPNW is ESPN’s pioneering women-centric digital platform designed to deliver relevant sports news, entertainment, and community engagement specifically for women.

As the Associate Creative Director of UX and Design, I led the redesign to create an experience that would inspire and engage women through sports.

A webpage displays sports news articles, images of athletes, and advertisements. The layout includes a main article, sidebars with additional stories, a featured car ad, and a section for podcast content.

Objective

The primary goal was to revamp the platform to empower women, providing a visually appealing and impactful user experience that balances aesthetics and functionality.

My role involved strategizing the UX and leading the creative direction to enhance both engagement and usability.

Design Approach

  • Color Palette: Selected a color scheme that resonates with the target audience by promoting a sense of empowerment and enthusiasm. Vibrant hues combined with subtle accents created an inspiring and inclusive atmosphere.
  • Typography: Chose fonts that balance readability with a modern, athletic aesthetic, ensuring that the design feels both strong and approachable while maintaining clarity across devices.
  • Layout and Structure: Developed a clean, intuitive layout that prioritizes ease of navigation and accessibility. The content architecture ensures users can quickly find relevant information while engaging with community-driven features.

Outcome

The redesigned ESPNW platform achieved significant improvements in user engagement.

The vibrant, user-friendly design allowed for better content discovery, making it easier for women to connect over their shared passion for sports. Metrics like increased session duration and lower bounce rates underscored the platform’s success.
